She changed your dirty diapers, wiped your snotty nose, and drove her minivan like Mario Andretti. Her guilt trip is lethal, but she loves you more than anyone else in the world. Yes, we are talking about your mom! It’s almost Mother’s Day. Time to celebrate those ladies that keep our world running smoothly.
Most of us remember to call our moms on Mother’s Day. In fact, approximately 122 million calls are made every year on the second Sunday in the month of May. If you are afraid you'll forget, set a reminder on your phone. Do it now. Nobody needs THAT guilt trip.
Americans go crazy for Mother’s Day. Check out this breakdown of American dollars spent every year for Mothers Day gifts:
- Cards: $813 million
- Flowers: $2.6 billion
- Jewelry: $4.6 billion
- Personal services (spa, pedicure): $1.8 billion
But - mom always says she likes handmade gifts the best, right? If you are adventurous and a bit crafty, here are 6 DIY projects that any mother would love.
6 DIY Mother’s Day Gifts:
1. Mom Journal
Purchase a small journal and a bookmark at your local stationary store. You can purchase a plain spiral notebook for a couple of dollars and decorate the cover. If your mom fancier, faux leather or moleskin journals run around $19.99
I like this one from Target.
Next, fill the pages with what you love about your mom. Don’t get overwhelmed. I’m not telling you to write the entire thing today! Instead, add a few pages every month or so. Designate a special place to leave it for her when you’ve made a new entry, using the bookmark to show her where the new entry begins.
In time, she will be able to look back over the years to be reminded of how special she is to you.
2. Sugar Scrub
Purchase your mother’s favorite tea leaves, raw sugar, jojoba oil and raw honey.
- 1 Cup Raw Sugar
- ¼ Cup Oil (coconut oil or jojoba oil work well)
- 2 Tablespoons Dry Tea Leaves (not brewed)
- 1 Tablespoon Raw Honey
Mix the sugar and the oil first, then add the tea leaves and honey. Next, spoon the mixture into a jar with a lid. Tie a bow around the jar and decorate with raffia, shells, beads, etc.
That looks fun.
3. Herb Garden
Reuse old jars, pitchers, or even wine bottles to make a small indoor herb garden. Just fill the container about halfway with soil and plant rosemary, thyme, basil, parsley, etc. Your mother will appreciate your recycling efforts! Plus, you might just reap the rewards when you come over for dinner. For complete instructions, click on this link.
4. Text Necklace
Visit Etsy.com to purchase a pendant necklace and add text from your mother’s favorite novel, Bible verse, quote, etc. If you can’t remember her favorites, we’ll never tell. Just use a quote that reminds you of her. She’ll treasure it.
5. Map Keychain
Do you and your mom share a special bonding place? Purchase one of these DIY keychains and insert a map of your special spot. Wherever she goes, your special times will go with her.

6. Mother’s Day Breakfast
The way to your mom’s heart is through Lemon Blueberry Pancakes. This recipe from Food Network is absolutely sinful. I totally recommend it.
If all else fails, make reservations! Last year, 87 million people made plans to go to a restaurant for Mother's Day. Just do something that makes mom feel special on her special day, and makes your brother/sister wish that they'd thought of it.
