This sweet film about a modest woman catching the eye of a wealthy prince-type figure is not a new trope, but we love this take on a classic tale.

The Big Sick

Starring Kumail Najiani, The Big Sick is loosely based on his real life love story with his now-wife, Emily. During the film, Kumail ends up meeting Emily, an American graduate student, at one of his stand-up comedy shows. As their relationship blossoms and they start to fall in love, Kumail worries what his traditional Muslim parents will think of his new girlfriend. He quickly finds himself developing a bond with her mom and dad after Emily suddenly gets sick and enters a coma. This film is a sweet twist on a modern love story.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

Filled with a stunning cast, Crazy, Stupid, Love is one of the best rom-coms that depicts our generation. Cal Weaver, played by Steve Carell, is living the American dream with his stellar good job, a beautiful house, great children and a beautiful wife, named Emily. However, his life quickly unravels when his wife shares that she had an affair and wants a divorce. As he tries to balance his newly single life and try out dating again, Cal gets help from Jacob Palmer, played by Ryan Gosling, who is a stylish ladies’ man that takes Cal under his wing. If you’re a fan of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s charm or love Steve Carell’s witty humor, you will absolutely love this movie.

When Harry Met Sally

“I’ll have what she’s having.” When Harry Met Sally is probably one of the most iconic rom-coms of all time, which is why it takes first place on our list. Released in 1989, the film is about two college graduates, Harry Burns (played by Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (played by Meg Ryan) that argue about whether men and women can really be just platonic friends or if the relationship will always become more complicated. Ten years later, they are reunited and in the company of their respective best friends, Jess (Bruno Kirby) and Marie (Carrie Fisher), try to stay friends without sex becoming an issue in their relationship. You can never go wrong with this one!
